For decades, there has been a war between two methods of reading. Some prefer and defend a so-called global method while others advocate the syllabic method. The global method is based on the “global” recognition of words, while the syllabic or phonetic method (or phonics) is based on the formation of syllables from the sounds of consonants and vowels.

However, recent research has chosen a winner. The phonetic method seems to offer better results for those who are beginning to learn and a vast project is underway in the United States to adapt the curricula.
